Medical Assistant Career Field

Medical Assistants typically work under the supervision of licensed Physicians and Nurses. It is a rewarding career for individuals who enjoy helping others and multi-tasking. Medical Assisting is also used by many people as a transitional occupation to further allied health careers such as:

  • Phlebotomist
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
  • Home Health Aides (HHA)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)

These advanced career options usually require additional training and education.

Medical Assistant Certification

Although certification is not a requirement for working as a Medical Assistant, it is highly recommended that you complete and pass the certification process. In order to become certified as a Medical Assistant you will need to pass the MA Certification Exam that is administered through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

Only students who pass the certification exam through the AAMA will become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). This is not to be confused with the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification, which is achieved by passing the examination offered by the American of Medical Technologists (AMT).

Medical Assistant training at Everest prepares students with the knowledge and skills needed to pass the AAMA or AMT certification exams. It is the student's responsibility to arrange for and take the exams through either AAMA or AMT.
